The Future of AI in Education

The opening session set an ambitious tone, discussing the exponential growth of computing power, which is really mind-boggling. Today, $1,000 worth of computing can match the cognitive power of one human brain. By 2050, it's projected that the same amount will equal the combined brain power of all humans! However, multiple sessions emphasized that while AI can excel in fostering specific skills, it cannot replicate human judgment and wisdom. The expected progression of AI integration in education was discussed and outlined as follows:

The consensus at the event was clear that we are in Stage 1 and the current K-12 infrastructure is lagging in AI adoption. Many pointed back to the fear of the emerging technology, while others felt we are just in the beginning stages of understanding how to use AI effectively. Instead of thinking of it as a tool that can be used for cheating, educators need to begin to think about Stage 2, and how we can learn from AI. This means working alongside students to understand how it can be used effectively and how it can spark imagination. From there we can move on to Stage 3 of learning with AI.

The Expiry of ESSER Funds

With the expiration of ESSER funds at the end of this year, many sessions focused on the implications and future planning for schools that have relied on these resources. This is a critical issue, impacting budgets and funding allocations across various educational institutions.

In 2019, EdGate, joined a host of academic and technology leaders in the launch of the 1EdTech Learning Consortium as a Contributing Member and CASE Network Preferred Service Provider and Sponsor.

For the past 4 years EdGate has been focused on spreading the word about the value of CASE, and assisting companies through the myriad changes that have taken place. With many states and organizations moving towards adoption of the CASE format for their learning standards, we work closely with our clients to either transition or add-on the CASE-formatted versions of those standards. Since the start in 2019, EdGate has continued to update the EdGate Standards Repository so standards can be provided to all EdGate clients in CASE format. This includes K-12 standards across all subjects and all 50 states.

The EdGate Standards Exchange has been certified by 1EdTech as a provider of their open, trusted, and innovative digital learning ecosystem. To remain a “TrustEd App” the submitted product must pass interoperability testing to ensure the application meets 1EdTech standards and certification requirements. Earlier this year we completed the recertification of the Exchange, and are pleased to say it is certified as a CASE® v1.0 compliant API.

EdGate is diligently monitoring which states are using 1EdTech (formerly IMS Global) CASE identifiers to represent their standards. While there are many states making plans to transition to the IMS Global CASE identifiers, the following is a list of states that are already actively using CASE:

Florida
Georgia
Illinois
Kentucky
Montana
South Carolina
Texas

1EdTech is working directly with states to publish more of their standards and several have a “Coming Soon” status. What does this mean for EdGate clients? As states and organizations move to adopting the CASE format for their learning standards, EdGate will assist with transitioning our clients quickly and efficiently to the CASE-formatted versions of those standards, upon request. EdGate + 1EdTech CASE = Helping K-12 content publishers improve standards interoperability

As noted above, EdGate has joined 1EdTech (formerly IMS Global). And we've actually been hard at work since the beginning of 2020 prepping our standards catalog so that standards can be provided to EdGate clients in CASE format. This includes K-12 standards across all subjects and all 50 states.

But first, what is CASE? CASE is an acronym for Competency & Academic Standards Exchange® (CASE) and is a data standard designed specifically for issuing official learning standards and workforce competencies in an interchangeable, digital format that works seamlessly across the various district data systems. Having universal identifiers for education competencies makes it possible for any tool or application to share information between systems easily.

States such as Montana, Texas, and Georgia are now using the CASE format. In fact, the Texas Educational Agency's Proclamation 2020 requires that curriculum resources up for adoption align to CASE-formatted standards. More states will be following suit.

When EdGate aligns content for our clients, in addition to providing the EdGate GUIDS, upon request, we will also offer the CASE identifiers. Again, this will make it easier for various systems to share standards, deliver assessments based on those frameworks, and report results without human manipulation.

While there are already CASE standards available via the 1EdTech Network Registry, EdGate will provide standards that complement those in the CASE Network. So content publishers or platforms that need Social Studies, Science, Art, Health and PE, World Languages, SEL, CTE, Early Childhood or supplemental sets of standards can rely on EdGate to provide CASE-formatted standards via our IMS-certified CASE 1.0 API.

Texas’ 2020-2021 Adoption Cycle Requires New Standards

Along with implementing new high school language arts standards for 2020-2021, Texas is reviewing language arts content for adoption for the 2020-2021 school year. EdGate correlates thousands upon thousands of content items for our publisher clients and we know how important the Texas adoptions are. If your company’s content is being submitted for adoption under Texas’ Proclamation 2020, EdGate can provide the needed 2020-2021 language arts correlations along with the TEA's machine-readable TEKS with the 1EdTech (formerly IMS Global) CASE-Certified identifiers. EdGate is poised and ready to provide CASE identifiers as a correlation deliverable for the Texas curriculum adoption in 2020 or for any other state that may require this format.

EdGate is mindful of the many advantages that the 1EdTech CASE movement has both for us and for educational publishers generally. We welcome the advent of a project to create a non-proprietary standards format that can be used to improve comparability and interoperability of what have historically been incompatible sets of standards and we are fully behind the CASE project and hope to be able to contribute to its ultimate success. Texas Requires Publishers use CASE by 2020

Have you heard the news? Texas has announced that as part of Proclamation 2020 they will require that publishers use the machine-readable TEKS standards that have been provided by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). These standards are provided in the 1EdTech CASE-Certified machine-readable format.

EdGate correlates thousands upon thousands of content items for our publisher clients and we know how important the Texas adoptions are. EdGate is poised and ready to provide CASE formatted standards as a correlation deliverable for the Texas curriculum adoption in 2020 or for any other state that may require this format.
