| More medal controversy: Apolo Anton Ohno of the USA kisses his gold medal at the medals ceremony for the men's 1500m short track event in Salt Lake City, February 20, 2002. Kim Dong-Sung of South Korea crossed the finish line first, but Ohno was awarded the gold when Kim was disqualified for blocking on the final lap. Ohno will race in two more events — the men’s 500m and the men’s relay — on Saturday. (Photo by Kimimasa Mayama, Reuters) |

Curriculum Application: synthesis, directed writing, vocabulary, grammar
DISCUSSION: In your opinion, what has been the greatest physical triumph of the Winter Games so far? The greatest spiritual triumph? What lessons have the Games taught the nation and the world? Which of the events scheduled for the weekend do you predict will create the most headlines? Why? What kind of mood are organizers setting for the closing ceremony? Do the musicians who are performing adequately reflect America’s diversity?
ACTIVITY: Look through today’s paper, and compile a list of 20 words — five nouns or proper nouns, five adjectives, five adverbs and five verbs. (Make your list challenging!) Then, trade lists with a partner and write a personal reflection on (or a summary of) the Winter Games using all 20 words.
