In 2011, the Maine Learning Results were updated to include Common Core as the standards for English language arts and math. Full implementation was completed in the 2012-2013 school year.

Maine joined the SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) in 2014. In 2015 Maine dropped SBAC and created the Maine Comprehensive Assessment System (MeCAS).
