South Carolina formally adopted the Standards, although they had been controversial. A bill to repeal the Standards beginning in the 2015-2016 school year was officially signed by the Governor in June 2014. The state legislation required the state to develop new standards for the 2015-16 academic year.

South Carolina joined the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) but officially withdrew membership in 2014. The state developed their own assessment testing called South Carolina College-and Career-Ready Assessments (SC READY).
